Samuel and Rebecca (Wolf) Luntz were Polish Jewish immigrants. Samuel founded the Canton Iron and Metal Company in 1898. Two of his sons, Darwin and Abe, founded their own scrap metal firm in 1916, The Luntz Iron and Steel Company, due to the growing need for scrap with the onset of World War I. Both Darwin and Abe were very involved in civic and community activities. Abe Luntz married Fanny Teplansky on October 10, 1916 in Canton, Ohio. They had five children. The family moved to Cleveland in 1939 for business purposes as well as for more varied religious, musical, and educational opportunities. In order to hold down costs, Thomas Boddie created all his recording equipment by hand, rather than purchasing pre-made machines. He owned the company with his wife, Louise Boddie. Their clientele included musicians of various styles, including gospel, country, bluegrass, rock, soul, and rhythm and blues, earning the studio the nickname of "Little Nashville". Records were made for national distribution as well as for independent groups and artists who only wished to have their music recorded for personal use or local distribution, such as recordings of sermons for church groups, with Boddie creating small, independent record labels for the purpose. Stokes was the first African American mayor of a major American city and the first African American Democrat in the Ohio State Legislature, where he served three terms from 1962-67. A tank, constructed at the northern end of East 61st Street in 1942 to store reserves of liquid natural gas for local war industries, began to leak vapor which, when mixed with air, became combustible and exploded. It contained the equivalent to 90 million cubic feet of non-liquified gas and set off the most disastrous fire in Cleveland's history. A second tank exploded about twenty minutes after the first. Homes and businesses in the largely Slovenian-American neighborhood were set ablaze through an area of more than one square mile of Cleveland's east side. His eight children all became musicians, including several who became members of the Cleveland Orchestra. In 1916, two of his children, Frank (V) and Fred, founded the Hruby Conservatory of Music in Cleveland. Terry established the National Electric Lamp Association (NELA) with Burton G. Tremaine in 1901 in Cleveland, Ohio. Formed ostensibly as a consortium of small lamp makers in order to compete with industry giants such as General Electric and Westinghouse, NELA was found to be secretly and 75% financed by General Electric during a federal anti-trust suit in 1911. Terry served as vice president of GE and under his leadership Nela Park was built, one of the first campus-like research and production facilities in the United States. The company manufactured construction equipment and was well known for its road graders. Morgan (1877-1963) was an entrepreneur and inventor whose inventions included the electric traffic signal and the gas mask. Morgan moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1895 and opened his own sewing machine sales and repair shop in 1907. He received a patent on his gas mask in 1912 and formed the National Safety Device Co. to manufacture and market it. He also established the G.A. Morgan Hair Refining Co., The Cleveland Call and Post, and the Wakeman Country Club for African Americans. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Garrett A. Fisher produced automobile bodies, and in 1926 became part of the General Motors Corporation. During World War II the plant produced tank and gun parts and engine parts for airplanes, wartime employment totalling 14,000, including a large number of women. After the war the plant produced large stamping dies and upholstery and trim sets rather than auto bodies. General Motors closed the plant in 1983. The plant was involved in several bitter strikes during the 1930s, including the 1936-1937 sit-down strike to gain union recognition by GM, which began at the plant.
